JMU is so close to the Shenandoah National Park, it’s a shame that more students don’t take advantage of all the adventures the park has to offer. Dark Hallows is a little known trail about twenty minutes into the park (just past Big Meadows). Only a mile and a half round trip, it’s perfect for your first hike of the season, beginners, or when you’re short on time. It has a small creek that flows into a waterfall, nice views, and plenty of places to stop and snap a picture! Those who want a more challenging adventure can continue down the Roosevelt River Loop trail at the bottom of Dark Hollows.

Hiking the actual trail is free, but it cost around fifteen dollars to get into the park per car (during peak season) or eight dollars per person. You can also buy a park pass that lasts seven days and plan your hikes close together to take advantage of all their great adventures! Make sure to pack plenty of water and sunscreen, but if you forget, the Big Meadows visitor center is about a mile before the trailhead.
