Funky’s Skate Center is definitely a hidden gem of Harrisonburg. If you’re looking to break the JMU bubble in an unconventional way, Funky’s is the place to go. Funky’s is incredibly cheap and unique to Harrisonburg. It features old-fashioned roller-skating as well as inline skating. They have black lights that make skating around even more fun (so make sure you wear white!) and they consistently play awesome throwbacks and popular songs. It caters very highly to the Harrisonburg community, so it’s also a great way to interact with people outside of JMU.

There is an overwhelming sense of community from the fun-loving and friendly staff to the people that come to Funky’s on a weekly basis. You can tell kids and adults alike are excited to share their talent and passion for skating. The environment is perfect to immerse yourself in when you are feeling bogged down by school or stress. You can put on some skates, be care free, and sing and dance along to the upbeat music. A lot of the time we get wrapped up in our own lives and responsibilities as well as the virtual world our cell phones bring us into. Going to Funky’s is a great way to escape from all of these things, and have fun in the immediate present. Prices for Funky’s vary depending on the day you go. Wednesdays from 7-9:30p.m. it’s cheap skate night, where college students can get in for $2 with their college i.d.. Friday night is a $3 admission with a college i.d., and Saturday night is an Open Skate Party for a $7 admission price.
